Melanoma can attack anywhere on the body.

True or false?

This statement is TRUE.

Melanoma can attack anywhere on the skin and INSIDE the body.

Melanoma is the most aggressive type of skin cancer and although it may start on the skin it does not have to penetrate too deep before it can start to travel to organs.

The only places where you won’t find melanoma is in teeth and hair, although it can grow within hair follicles. Melanoma is NOT JUST skin cancer.

There are many different types of melanoma, such as ocular and mucosal melanoma, which can notoriously be difficult to detect and diagnose.

Mucosal melanoma is an aggressive type of melanoma that can grow inside areas such as nose, mouth, anus and vagina.

Awareness is needed for these types of melanoma, particularly with health professionals who may carry out examinations on these body parts and incidentally discover a melanoma.

This statement is FALSE.

Melanoma is currently the 5th most common cancer in the UK with over 17,000 cases and over 2000 deaths in the UK in 2019.

Every year the numbers grow substantially, with incidence rates up by 32% in the last decade, and yet there is still very little awareness in the public domain about what melanoma is and how it actually affects a person.
